Today is a glorious day: HarperCollins has released my novel, The Rogue Retrieval, as a physical book.
This is a milestone in a journey that began in November 2007, when two important things happened:
- I registered for a fiction writing course at WashU.
- Amazon released the first Kindle e-reader device.
At least one of those events altered the course of history. In the 8+ years since, the publishing industry underwent rapid changes: e-books rose to prominence, Borders went bankrupt, and major publishing houses consolidated into the big five. In other words, publishing got a lot harder.
In some ways, however, it also got easier. The rise of digital publishing made it possible for anyone to publish a book and sell it to readers all over the world. Thousands of new books are published every single day. Competition became fiercer than ever before. Publisher profits and author earnings plummeted.
The ever-changing industry has created new business models, and new opportunities. It allowed a big publisher like HarperCollins to take a chance on an aspiring science fiction author who had virtually no credentials. It also fueled the growth of a vibrant writing community whose support helped him get good enough to make it.

Acknowledgements for The Rogue Retrieval
If you’d like to read my book in print, all you need to do is ask your local bookstore to order it for you. They’ll appreciate your business! You can also buy it directly from HarperCollins, Barnes & Noble, IndieBound, and of course Amazon.
It’s been a lifelong dream to see my name on the cover of a book. I’m so, so grateful to all of you who helped that become a reality.
